It's the holy grail of travel: the perfect tropical milky white sand beach with its clear turquoise waters, swaying palm trees, unspoiled by droves of tourists. Does it exist? Jose Marte It’s the holy grail of travel:the perfect tropical milky white sand beach withits clear turquoise waters, swaying palm trees, unspoiled by droves of tourists.Does it exist? Jose Marte Abueg searches El Nido's numerous islands It hits you first from below, when, looking out the window of the 19-seater SEAIR aircraft on the way from Busuanga to El Nido, you see little islands – unspoiled and green with white sandy beaches, and coral-skirted reefs under the midmorning tide, shaped and strewn by nature in an extra ordinary moment of creativity. On a bright, clear day, the islands, islets and keys in Bacuit Bay, 45 in all, stand distinct, marvelous. Under an overcast sky, they appear like thin layers of light, gray brushstrokes The El Nido airport has a tiny wooden entrance a few steps from the unpaved runway, with a water tank parked beside it. A simple welcome sign underneath the unpainted triangular wooden roof reminds you of where you are: an insular place with rural utilities. But, just past it, three hammocks hang languorously in the shade of the trees, and further on is the passenger terminal that looks more like a resort clubhouse. In the town proper, the “bayan” as residents call it, has stores and some inns that overlook the shore and Palawan’s signature limestone cliffs. From the sandy shore of the “bayan,” pump boats are readily available for exploring the limestone islands and their beaches. My brief is to find out which of these beaches fit the idyllic holidaymakers’ image — a white sand, crystal clear beach under sunny skies, preferably uninhabited, except for minions who will serve you piñacolada at the snap of your fingers. If there is one place to have a good start at beach combing it is El Nido. The area is not as easy to get to as some of the more popular tourist spots in the country. Some of the island beaches in the more accessible Luzon and the Visayas have gone the way of touristy beaches in the world – succumb to karaoke bars, five-star concrete resort monstrosities, and cafes and bars a-plenty, and degradation. In El Nido, there are over 100 private beach locations in the area, where you can enjoy a Crusoe-like environment. It helps that you have to log on the miles – a total of one and a half hours on board an aircraft – to get there. Once there, it is not much of an effort to explore the island. From the town, numerous boats are available to take you to the island of your dreams. Here is a choice of some of the best in the area : Entalula island Entalula’s beach has fine white sand lined by coconut trees, a perfect example of a tropical island, with a panoramic view of the bay. Right off the beach is a good swimming site, especially for beginners. Entalula is a favorite place for picnic lunches and sports like volleyball, badminton and intro rock-climbing. Dive sites are located in the west and south sides of the island.
Pangulasian beach With its many attractions, it is possible to spend the entire day at Pangulasian Island. This is a long stretch of white sand beach, with waters perfect for snorkeling, diving, or just for enjoying a swim. The area also offers the best view of the sunset. A trail located in the middle of the island is a good place for birdwatching, especially during early mornings and late afternoons. The trail ends at the peak of the island and provides a magnificent 360-degree view of the bay and nearby islands.
Sandbar The Sandbar, a private beach at the back of Lagen Island Resort in El Nido, is a favorite venue for romantic dinners under the stars. It is said to be a favorite place for holding weddings and has been witness to many marriage proposals.
Secret beach Found on Matinloc Island, Secret Beach is a sinkhole which you enter by snorkeling into a small opening through a limestone wall. At the corner of the sinkhole is a pocket of white sand beach, the island’s secret beach. At noon, the sun streams in through the opening, allowing a play of light and shadow against the beautiful rock formations. The beach floor drops abruptly. Best to visit this site when the sea is calm. There are four dive sites around the island with the one at the south tip of Matinloc being the deepest at 39 meters (124 feet).
Helicopter island The beach on Dilumacad Island or Helicopter island is an area for snorkeling, swimming and picnic lunches during island-hopping trips. For divers, there is an underwater tunnel at the northern side of the island and a fringing reef on the southern side. Helicopter island houses a beautiful beach that is ideal for snorkeling and swimming. If you’re to let your kids swim, make sure they are watched as the water abruptly deepens. Both ends of the beach have snorkeling spots. The beach is also a big one, stretching to some 200-300 meters.
7 Commandos beach This is a rather huge beach, stretching to about 200-300 meters. It’s good for small children to wade in – fine white sand, crystal clear water, gradually sloping sandy seabed. About five meters on the left hand side of the beach is a snorkeling area where you can spot corals and small fish.
Kulasa beach Located on Matinloc island, Kulasa beach is best during the summer (March-May) when the water is calm. It’s a beautiful beach at one of the coves in Matinloc, and offers a 100-meter beach strip, fringed by fine white sand. Good for swimming in and snorkeling. The sea floor slopes gradually and the water deepens only after about 10 meters.
Snake island Located near Pangulasian Island, Vigan Island is referred to as “Snake Island” because of a fine natural sandspit (s-shaped) sandbar that “snakes” off its shores. The sandspit is clearly visible only when the tide is low. On both sides of the sandspit are shallow swimming areas.
Cadlao Island Cadlao Island is known locally as “mini Tahiti” and rightfully so. Located at the southwest of the island, about a 25-minute boat ride from the town proper, Cadlao is known for its white-sand beaches, hidden lagoons and lush forest cover. Cadlao beach boasts of fine, creamy white sand, a gradually sloping sea floor, and crystal clear waters. It’s perfect for snorkeling, swimming, and just for wading in. As a bonus, the island is also home to Cadlao Lagoon and its beautiful rock formations. Before entering the lagoon you are greeted by a garden of corals teeming with schools of small colorful fish. The area is good for snorkeling. Of all the islands in El Nido, Cadlao has the highest limestone peak at 609 meters above sea level, with a land area of 1,006 hectares.
Pinasil island Located in Bacuit Bay, Pinasil Island has a cathedral-like cavern accessible by dinghy or kayak. Its cool interior is lit at certain times of the day by sunlight coming through an opening at its peak.

Unknown to many Filipinos, the pristine beauty of Palawan was all the rage in France (and some parts of Belgium) last year when at least nine million people were glued to their seats for 11 weeks to watch the seventh season of "Koh Lanta." Hosted by Denis Brogniart, "Koh Lanta" is the French franchise of the popular reality American TV show "Survivor." Season 7 was shot entirely in El Nido in Palawan, and there could not be any better location, as attested by the host, the 16 contestants, 70 production and crew people, plus about 100 local people who worked together for 40 days to bring to French televiewers the excitement and adventure that are typically "Survivor."
